As any regular bettor knows, favourites do not always justify their status at the head of the market in big horse races. That includes the Cheltenham Festival as much as any other meeting.
With the annual four-day gala of jumps horse racing fast approaching, what of the fancied runners heading to Prestbury Park for Champion Hurdle day? Is there any case to be made against them? Let’s take a look at the 2021 Cheltenham Festival favourites for the opening day…

Appreciate It

While trainer Willie Mullins is no strange to Supreme Novices’ Hurdle success, the famous Cheltenham roar hasn’t helped fancied runners of his home in recent years. Since Douvan delivered for the yard in 2015, only Klassical Dream has obliged for him in this race over the last five Festivals.
Appreciate It is a dual Grade 1 novice hurdle winner in Ireland that have travelled strongly through his races and won by staying them. Such qualities are certainly no negative for the Supreme, but he may be vulnerable to a speedier type such as Tolworth Hurdle winner Metier or Soaring Glory.

Shishkin

After overcoming a heap of trouble in the run last year to get up and land the Supreme, Shishkin is now out to sparkle in the Arkle Challenge Trophy for novice chasers. One of the most popular Cheltenham day 1 betting tips for this season after making the switch to fences look very easy, the world is his oyster.
The trouble is that Shishkin hasn’t beaten much, although Tamroc Du Mathan franked the Wayward Lad form with victory in the Pendil Novices’ Chase. At the Festival, Nicky Henderson’s hot prospect faces the rapidly progressive Irish raider Energumene and theirs could be a ding-dong tussle up the famous Cheltenham hill.
Honeysuckle
We know that Honeysuckle stays further than the Champion Hurdle trip, but a demolition of the best two-milers at the Dublin Racing Festival in her retaining the Irish equivalent puts Henry De Bromhead’s unbeaten mare in pole position. She won’t lack for stamina.

Fellow female and last year’s Champion Hurdle heroine Epatante has had a back problem, according to Henderson, which has been straightened out since her defeat in the Christmas Hurdle. Goshen is out for compensation after unseating at the final flight in the Triumph Hurdle, so there’s a speedy rival up against the mares come Cheltenham.

Concertista

After making an effortless step up in trip and winning both her starts this season, Concertista will benefit from high-profile absences from the Mares’ Hurdle. Roksana has two Grade 2 victories over further and is a previous winner of the race, so makes for an in-form rival.
Last year’s Coral Cup winner Dame De Compagnie could be back over hurdles here too, so Cocertista who took the Dawn Run for novices at the Festival in 2020 still has some competition. Whether her rivals have the same scope for further progress in this sphere remains to be seen.

Friday 25th

I think the handicapper has given THE UNIT a chance today at Warwick and Alan King will be hoping the better ground can bring about some improvement in his charge. A once classy hurdler, a long absence has dented The Unit’s career path but King is sure there is more to come from him still and in this race today he looks to have a great chance off bottom weight. It doesn’t look the strongest of races as a lot of these will almost certainly come on for the run and the top weight and likely favourite will surely struggle to concede so much weight to a horse like The Unit. There is no rain due so the more it dries out, the better his chance.

Warwick 3.53 – The Unit

Saturday 26th

I’m going to take a punt on the fitness of HOMETOWN BOY in the opener at Kempton on Saturday because if he is fit then he is certainly on a lenient mark. Stuart Edmunds’ horse was a progressive novice hurdler last year and his season culminated in a solid run over course and distance in a competitive EBF final. He was due to run at Chepstow at the start of the season but was a late defection and consequently not seen since. I hope it’s a clue that Edmunds is running him over a track he knows he will excel at for his first run back because he will have to be fit to win here as horses such as Tedham and Gunsight Ridge look to be lurking on dangerous marks.

In the Skybet Dovecote I have quite a strong fancy on CALICO. Dan Skelton’s horse impressed me greatly at Ludlow when he not only won cosily but jumped so well for a horse having his first start in this country. He beat a few solid yardsticks that day and with normal improvement to come I would expect him to put in a better performance again this time. The sharp track will suit him well as he has bags of speed and I’m hoping he will have too much for horses such as Atholl Street. Granted, Paul Nicholls’ favourite has won two races around Taunton, perhaps one of the sharpest tracks in the country, but I will be surprised if any Trevor Hemmings owned horse will have enough boot to win a Grade 2 novice hurdle around Kempton.

Kempton 1.15 – Hometown Boy

Kempton 3.00 – Calico

Ben Morgan
Ballymore Novices Hurdle
This looks to have more depth than the Supreme. The market had been headed by Bravemansgame but as usual Willie Mullins has pulled one out of the hat in GAILLARD DU MESNIL.
His performance at the Dublin Racing Festival was impressive considering how far back he was and he picked up again once in front.
His trainer suggested he had a tough race and with only six weeks until the Festival that’s a worry. It planted a seed of doubt, but I have been impressed enough to stick with him. His ability…

Mike Francis
THE question I’m most often asked at this time of the year is “what is your Cheltenham banker?” According to the clock, that’s a pretty easy question to answer because SHISHKIN looks several steps ahead of his rivals in the Arkle.
He has clocked the two best times in the field with his wins at Kempton and Doncaster looking special. When you consider that he wasn’t fully extended each time then clocking a pair of 153s was good going.
The betting has it right with Willie Mullins’ Energu…

Graham Buddry
There comes a time in life when you’ve done enough, had enough and retirement is both the sensible and pleasant option. Even in racehorses the ability and desire to compete wanes with the passing of the years but one horse continued well after his contempories had hung up their racing plates. Not only that, in his golden years he found form that was nothing short of astounding. Enter Mac Vidi.
A bay gelding foaled in 1965 (his own sire was foaled way back in 1947) Mac Vidi was seen as being nothing more than just a…

Andy Newton takes a close look at the marathon contest

Andy Newton
The Midlands National is always run on the Saturday after the Cheltenham Festival, so the race does tend to get a bit overshadowed by precedings at Prestbury Park. But, as a plus, the 4m1f Uttoxeter contest can also pick up the tail end of punters still in the Cheltenham buzz and looking for a bet!
Twelve months ago, we saw trainer Paul Nicholls break his duck in the race when he landed the prize with Truckers Lodge, who ran out an easy 18-length winner, and if lining up again in 2021 will be looking to become …

APPRECIATE IT wasn’t necessarily on my radar for the Supreme this season but his performance at Leopardstown over Christmas meant he sky-rocketed up my list of horses of interest.
What really impressed me was the way he powered clear, showing real gears in the process. His trainer, Willie Mullins, initially thought he would be more of a Ballymore horse so I think that late acceleration took him by surprise as much as me. You can argue main rival, Ballyadam, didn’t really perf…

Ian Heitman
The cold spell of weather which hit the country earlier in February led to the cancellation of many National Hunt fixtures and even a few all weather Flat meetings had to be cancelled due to snow at Newcastle and a frozen track at Chelmsford.
With it looking increasingly likely there won’t be any crowds allowed on racecourses for some time, the big National Hunt festivals at Cheltenham and Aintree look set to be staged behind closed doors and that could even be the case heading into the Flat season with the Derb…
